The Promise and the Pitfall of Seed Starting
Starting vegetables and flowers from seed indoors offers genuine advantages over purchasing transplants: access to far more variety than any local garden center carries, significant cost savings for large plantings, the ability to time transplant date precisely, and the satisfaction of growing plants from their earliest stage. It also has a reliable failure mode that discourages many first attempts: weak, stretched, pale seedlings that collapse before they reach the garden.
The stretched, pale seedling problem — called etiolation — has a single cause that explains the majority of indoor seed-starting failures. Once that cause is understood and addressed, indoor seed starting becomes straightforward.
The Single Cause of Most Seedling Failure: Inadequate Light
Seedlings require significantly more light than most homes can provide through windows alone. A south-facing window in winter — the best-case scenario for window growing — delivers perhaps 1,000–2,000 foot-candles on a clear day, for a few peak hours. Seedlings need 2,000–4,000 foot-candles for 14–16 hours daily. The math explains why window-grown seedlings stretch toward the light source, become pale and weak, and often topple under their own weight.
The solution is grow lights positioned close to the seedlings — 2 to 4 inches above the seedling tops for LED grow lights, 4 to 6 inches for fluorescent tubes. At this distance, for 14–16 hours daily on a timer, seedlings grow compact, dark-green, and stocky — the characteristics of a healthy transplant. The grow light setup is the non-negotiable foundation of successful indoor seed starting.
Timing: Working Backward from Last Frost
Starting seeds too early is the second most common failure mode in indoor seed starting. A tomato started 12 weeks before the last frost date — which might seem to give it a head start — grows into a pot-bound, stressed plant that experiences severe transplant shock. Most tomatoes need 6–8 weeks of indoor growing; starting 10–12 weeks before transplant date doesn’t produce a bigger tomato, it produces a stressed one.
The seed packet’s ‘weeks before last frost to start indoors’ guidance is based on the species’ actual growth rate. Trust it. Find your area’s average last frost date (available from the USDA or your state cooperative extension service), count back the specified weeks, and that’s your seed-starting date. Mark it on the calendar rather than starting ‘whenever feels right’ in late winter.
The Growing Medium Question
Garden soil is not appropriate for seed starting — it’s too dense, doesn’t drain adequately in containers, and often carries weed seeds and pathogens that overwhelm fragile seedlings. Seed starting mix (a soilless, lightweight medium of perlite, vermiculite, and peat or coco coir) provides the drainage and air porosity that seedling roots need without the risks of garden soil.
The distinction between seed starting mix and potting mix matters. Standard potting mix is appropriate for mature plants in containers but is too rich in nutrients and sometimes too dense for germination. Seeds contain all the energy needed for initial germination; once the first true leaves appear, light fertilization (quarter-strength balanced fertilizer) begins feeding the seedlings without burning them.
Hardening Off: The Transition Nobody Wants to Wait For
Plants grown indoors under artificial light in a stable temperature environment are physiologically unprepared for outdoor conditions — direct sun, wind, temperature fluctuation, and lower humidity. Transplanting them directly outdoors causes sunscald, wilting, and sometimes death even when outside temperatures are suitable, because the plant’s internal systems haven’t adapted to outdoor exposure.
Hardening off — a 7–14 day gradual exposure process — prepares the plant for outdoor conditions. Day 1–2: 1–2 hours in outdoor shade. Day 3–4: 2–4 hours in morning sun and afternoon shade. Day 5–7: increasing outdoor time including direct sun. Day 8–14: full outdoor exposure, but brought in if frost is expected. This process is tedious and requires remembering to move plants twice daily, but it’s the difference between transplants that thrive and transplants that spend three weeks recovering.
